This specialised decorating course looks at different ways decoration can be applied to ceramics during the various stages of its manufacture.

Taking place over two sessions, you will decorate a group of tiles made of several clays to enable you to compare how each material interacts with the decorative techniques.

During the first session we will look at decorating directly onto raw clay using a range of materials and techniques including; mono-printing, screen printing and slips. We will look at the qualities gained from the techniques, examine the materials used and discuss their properties, sharing recipes etc… to enable you to make decisions about the most suitable techniques for your own work.

During the second session will look at decorative techniques which can be applied to bisque (including glaze and underglaze) and decorating onto fired glazed ware using enamels and lustre. Again we will discuss the various properties of the materials and processes used including possibilities around creating your own printed decals.

Over the two days there will be time set aside to explore the various materials and processes and it would be beneficial for you to bring drawings to use during the sessions. If there are finishes you like but don’t know how to achieve them then please bring images of work so we are able discuss how to achieve a similar look of your own.

By the end of the two days you should have a good understanding of the different qualities you can achieve and be able to adapt these to your own practice.

PLEASE NOTE: For speed on the day, much of the pattern work we will use will be ready made however you will be talked through the possibilities of producing your own designs.
